Please provide an overview of your Hub.
Our community hub is located in Aitkenvale State School in Townsville, Queensland. It has been operating since 2021, and provides a centre for cultural exchange, activities, education, support, referrals and a welcoming space for school families and the wider community. We also focus on helping children transition smoothly into school life, providing educational programs to support this important process.
What is your role at the hub?
In my role as community hub leader, I take pride in creating a supportive environment where everyone feels genuinely welcomed and valued. Affectionately referred to as "mum for all" within our community, I view my position as more than just overseeing operations; it's about embodying a nurturing and supportive presence. My goal is to foster a strong sense of belonging and community for everyone who walks through our doors. I believe in providing compassionate support and building meaningful connections with each individual who visits our hub. This involves listening with empathy, offering guidance, and ensuring that everyone feels respected and understood. By cultivating this caring atmosphere, I aim to establish a hub where families and community members not only access essential services but also feel empowered to engage, connect, and grow together.
What is unique or special about your hub and the work of Community Hubs Australia?
In today’s diverse society, we acknowledge the significance of creating inclusive environments that support families from various cultural backgrounds and ensure a seamless transition for children into school life. The community hub at Aitkenvale State School offers a nurturing space that celebrates diversity and promotes a sense of belonging. Community Hubs serve as a dynamic centre of cultural exchange and support. We provide a wide range of tailored resources and services to meet the needs of our diverse families and the broader community. Educational workshops are offered to promote cultural understanding and appreciation, alongside playgroups, English lessons, educational support including swimming lessons, among other activities. The success of our community hub is a result of ongoing collaboration with local organisations, community groups, and dedicated volunteers. Aitkenvale’s community hub continues to enrich our community, ensuring inclusivity and support for all our families.
What are three strategies your hub uses to ensure that children and families feel welcomed and connected?
Three strategies our hub employs to ensure that our children and families feel welcomed and connected are:
- We prioritise cultural sensitivity by acknowledging and respecting the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our families, creating a space where everyone can thrive and contribute to a vibrant and inclusive community environment.
- We facilitate peer support groups and community engagement activities specifically tailored for our families.
- Our hub operates with an open-door policy, welcoming everyone at any time. We actively encourage our families to take ownership of our services and facilities.
What would you like to see for all children and families accessing Child and Family Hubs across Australia?
Hubs should offer a variety of services including early childhood education, healthcare, parenting support, and mental health resources. Inclusive policies should prioritise accessibility for everyone. Supporting healthcare access and providing excellent early childhood education are beneficial. Offering guidance to parents and caregivers in child development and accessing resources is essential. Collaboration with community organisations enhances effectiveness, creating supportive environments where families can thrive with comprehensive support.
